Το Συμβούλιο των Ευρωπαϊκών Εκκλησιών διοργάνωσε στις 27-28 Φεβρουαρίου 2018 στο Παρίσι διεπιστημονικό συνέδριο με τίτλο «PLAYING GOD? – The science, theology, and societal issues on gene-editing”.
Στο συνέδριο αυτό συμμετείχε και ο Αναπλ. Καθηγητής Μιλτιάδης Βάντσος παρουσιάζοντας την άποψη της ορθόδοξης βιοηθικής για την επεξεργασία του ανθρωπίνου γονιδιώματος. Το θέμα της εισήγησής του ήταν: «Are we playing God by editing our genes? An orthodox perspective”. Επίσης, συμμετείχε στην συζήτηση στρογγυλής τραπέζης μαζί με τους καθηγητές Peter Dabrock και Bruno Saintôt, που παρουσίασαν αντίστοιχα την προτεσταντική και ρωμαιοκαθολική θεώρηση, και τον καθηγητή βιολογίας Robin Lovell-Badge.
Περίληψη της εισήγησής του Μ. Βάντσου:
The impressive progress of genetics in the last few years has already made possible the alteration and editing of genome, while the perspectives of further improvement of the relevant techniques in the close future seem to be very promising. Hence, the significance of the ethical consideration due to genome editing potential developments is of essential value not only to numerous applications in human’s life, but also to human nature itself. On the one hand genome editing enables gradually the treatment of incurable diseases and the enhancement of human capacities, on the other hand there is uncertainty about the safety of the new techniques and worries about the protection of human’s autonomy and dignity. In my paper, I am attempting to present an approach on the basis of orthodox anthropology and ethics. I firstly examine the human desire of “playing God”, which can be understood in a theologically acceptable manner, since the human has been created by God in His image and he is called to become similar to Him. I thereafter refer to the three basic features, which are connected with the image of God according to the orthodox tradition, namely human freedom, sovereignty and creativity. I deal with these features in the context of the genome editing discussion searching for an ethical orientation in the main questions. I conclude my paper underlining the fact that human being is not a mere biological existence but also a spiritual one, which should not be underestimated.
